IDE Cable

The above diagram shows a typical IDE hard drive cable and how it should be fitted. Note that the pin 1 of the cable is identified by the red (usually) colour and that the cable identifies which connector should be used for master/slave. This is used if you set the drives to be identified as master or slave by the connector used, known as cable select. Note the notch on the connectors; this is used to ensure that the connector is inserted correctly. If the cable you have does not have any notches, make sure that pin 1 is nearest the power connector. For each of the drives you will set jumpers to denote master, slave or cable select.
