File Types

Complete the table shown. If you don't know an answer, find a file on your disk using Windows explorer and double click it or look at the File types tab under Folder options... from the menu bar. Take care when doing this with files not listed below as you could cause your computer to crash. Keep a note at the back of your logbook of all the files types you encounter.

Bmp - Bitmap graphic - Graphics application

Mid - MIDI music file -Music writing/playing file

Wav - Wave audio file - Music file (e.g. Windows Media Player)

Mpg - Video file (e.g. Windows Media Player)

Wmv - Windows movie - Windows Media Player

Au - Audio file - (e.g. Windows Media Player)

gif - Graphical image format graphic - Graphics application

mdb - Database file - Microsoft Access

rtf - Rich Text Format file - Word-processing application

tmp - Temporary file - Typically no association

txt - Text document - (e.g. Microsoft Notepad)
