File Compression

This is a legacy requirement from the early computer systems where disk space was limited and expensive and files had to be compressed to save space. File compression can either be assigned to a partition or, on a NTFS partition, to the files within a folder. Today there is little advantage in compressing files and it can cause problems when copying or moving files from a compressed drive/folder to one that is non-compressed: you might run out of space!
