PC Operating Systems
The most popular and widespread Windows operating system at the time of writing is Windows XP.
Currently there are two versions of Microsoft Windows XP:
- Windows XP Home - for home use
- Windows XP Professional - for business and professional use
Windows XP Home has reduced security features as these are rarely required for home use, and it cannot, for example, connect a PC to a domain. It is, therefore, essential that the correct version for a particular need is purchased with a new PC although there are now licensing options which allow organisations to upgrade/standardise their computer systems. However, even with these options most computers run with the originally installed operating system and you will need to know how they function.
There are many issues to consider when selecting the most appropriate operating system, including cost, compatibility, CPU, memory and storage requirements.
