When Microsoft Windows was first developed the system settings were stored in (.ini files but as more options, in terms of hardware and software, became available, the number of (.ini files became unmanageable and, beginning with Windows 95, the configuration and execution instructions for Windows and its installed applications were consolidated into the Windows registry.
