Scripting Languages and APIs

Other methods used by clients to access databases are scripting languages.

Typical scripting languages are ASP, PHP and PERL.

Another method is to use API (Application Programming Interface). Two APIs in use today are ODBC and JDBC.

ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) is an API mainly used with Microsoft Windows operating systems to connect to databases created using database programs such as Access, Foxpro, dBase, Oracle, MySQL, Paradox etc.

JDBC (Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) uses the Java programming language to provide connectivity. Java is a platform independent programming language (will work with many different operating systems).
