Multimedia Extensions and Plug-ins
A plug-in is a small piece of software that can be added to a program to give additional functionality. In the case of the Internet browser, there are many additional extensions and plug-ins available. One of the best known of these is Macromedia Flash. Most software programs are designed with an API, which allows other programmers to create additional features to add on to the software. Over time, some of the better additions become permanent features of the programs as new versions are released.
Flash and Shockwave
Macromedia produces multimedia plug-ins for browsers, such as Flash and Shockwave. To see examples of Flash and Shockwave files, visit www.macromedia.com and click 'Showcase'. You may need to click the images to start or you may need to download the plug-in if you don't already have it installed.
Some search engines and web security programs add extra toolbars to your web browser. The search engine www.yahoo.com has a link to the yahoo toolbar on its home page.
