Monitoring Server Hardware

Server hardware is normally monitored by means of the Device Manager MMC, but there are other utilities, such as certain Control Panel applets or stand-alone utilities like WINMSD (Microsoft System Diagnostics) which can be used to monitor and report on hardware.

Device Manager, which can found in the Computer Management console or as its own MMC in the Administrative Tools program group generally the first choice for hardware management. It will display the operating status of all Plug and Play (PnP) devices connected to the system. The status of non-PnP devices can be viewed by selecting the Show Hidden Devices option from the view menu.

WINMSD, which can be launched from the command line or Run menu, gives an overview of the hardware installed on a Windows Server 2003 system.

Some devices, such as modems and display adapters, are best managed through their individual Control Panel applet, rather than via Device Manager.

The activities given on the following pages can contribute towards your log book for this unit. You must demonstrate that you can use relevant system tools to monitor server hardware..
