Monitoring Application Performance

As we have already noted, it is important for administrators to monitor system performance regularly. This can be done by using System Monitor, both for real-time monitoring and to analyse the logs created using Peformance Logs and Alerts.

There are four key areas of server performance that can have a major impact on application performance: memory, network usage, processor usage and disk performance.

In the next few sections we'll take a look at each of these in turn, noting the counters that should be monitored and the relevant thresholds.

The activities given on this page and the following pages can contribute towards your log book for this unit. You are expected to demonstrate that you can monitor and optimise server memory, network usage, processor usage and disk performance and use counters and thresholds.
