Professional Characteristics

What characteristics should a professional exhibit?

Professional bodies each have their own ideas of the characteristics that their members should possess to be considered "a professional". These are stated in their codes of conduct and ethics and all of the bodies have their own versions of these. Certain items appear in all of them including:

  • keeping up to date with the field
  • helping their colleagues advance within their field
  • showing concern for the well being of their clients
  • adhering to the relevant legislation
  • respecting client confidentiality
