Institutions and Job Functions
Each of the professional institutions brings its own focus to the computing profession and is likely to be of greater or lesser interest to those in specific job roles. This may vary at different times in an individuals career and some people may find it relevant to be members of more than one institution.
- The IEEE with its engineering bias is focused more closely on the hardware and architecture of computers and is most likely to be of interest to those in engineering roles.
- The IMIS has as its focus "big-iron" and the concerns of data management and information systems professionals, so is more likely to be of interest to those in management roles.
- The IAP is obviously of most interest to those working as Analysts or Programmers.
- The BCS takes a more global view of the computing industry and seeks to represent members at all levels, although its higher levels of membership tend to be restricted to those with degree-level qualifications and experience in the more technical areas of computing.
