Concept Report
Given an initial piece of writing ('the concept'), you need to study this to determine exactly what is being said and just how effective this is. Different pieces of writing have a different purpose - usually to pass on information, but the reason behind this may vary. The purpose of the text you are given to work from for this unit should be to convey the task facing your group.
Your Concept Study Report should begin with a summary of the text. To summarise a piece of writing you should, in your own words, mention all main points raised without changing the author's meaning.
Often the best way to summarise a text is to read through once to gain an overall understanding. Next, re-read the text this time highlighting the key points (that is, without the supporting information such as examples). Now you can begin to write the summary in your own words making sure that you don't change the writer's meaning.

Activity 6
Consider the brief below and write a summary for this text:
"A small company with 10 employees requires a new computerised system that allows all employees to record their non-attendance in the coming weeks. Each employee has their own workstation and the company have 1 server storing all shared data files and printers. Any of the employees should be able to access the new diary-like system and block off any holiday dates or appointments. All individuals are to have access to change only their own dates, but the ability to read those of all others. The Managing Director would like a weekly report so that she can see who will be absent from work the following week."
