D75V 35: Computer Networks: Network Technology and Data Communications
This Unit is designed to introduce candidates to the basic concepts and principles of data communications, and to provide candidates with a wide knowledge of the technologies and standards involved in the construction of modern Local and Wide Area Networks. It is intended for candidates undertaking a Computing or Information Technology-related qualification who require an understanding of modern networking concepts and practice.
On completion of the Unit the candidate should be able to:
- Define the principles of data communications
1.2 Basic concepts and terminology.
1.3 Media characteristics.
1.4 Analogue modulation techniques.
1.5 Digital line coding techniques.
1.6 Multiplexing techniques.
2. Define the characteristics and construction of local area networks.
3. Define the characteristics and construction of wide area networks.
Credit value: 2 HN credits at SCQF level 8: (16 SCQF credit points at SCQF level 8)
Recommended prior knowledge and skills: Access to this Unit will be at the discretion of the Centre. There are no specific requirements but candidates would benefit from knowledge of binary numbers, digital data representation and digital electronic operation. This may be demonstrated by the possession of HN Units such as HN Unit D75P 34: Computer Architecture and HN Unit D75R 34: Computer Hardware: Installation and Maintenance.
