Routing Messages

Before we start to look at Internet addresses and protocols, it is important to understand the basics of how messages travel through the Internet. Let's assume that you are transferring a file via the Internet.

Sender
	Splits message into numbered packets
	Each packet has destination address
	Packets sent out onto Internet
Internet
Routers forward packets to destination via other routers
Each packet may use a different route
Receiver
Packets arrive at destination possibly out of sequence
	Packets rebuilt into correct order
