Corporate Profile

SQA International is a business area within SQA which works to support and develop education and training overseas through a variety of services and activities.

The SQA is a national, Non-Departmental Public Body responsible for the development, accreditation, assessment and certification of a large range of academic, vocational and professional qualifications up to and beyond degree level.

The SQA works with a broad range of national and international partners to ensure that our qualifications and systems of education and training are relevant, reflect best practice, and meet the changing needs of individuals, the labour market, societies and national economies.

The SQA:

  • is governed by a Board of Management;
  • has an annual turnover averaging £48.5M (approx EUR 72M);
  • employs approximately 680 full-time staff located at its Glasgow, Edinburgh and Beijing offices;
  • has approved 1,875 centres across the world to offer its qualifications.

The SQA was formed through the amalgamation of the Scottish Vocational Education Council (SCOTVEC) and the Scottish Examination Board on 1 April 1997. A partnership national bodies including SQA along with the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAAScotland) Universities Scotland, and the Scottish Government established the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) which was launched in 2001.

SQA currently holds Certification to the National Standard ISO27001:2005 for its Information Security Management Systems, relating to those aspects of the business which are involved in the production of question papers as well as for more specific areas of its commercial activity.

SQA is also registered to and subsequently certificated for ISO9001:2000 within its more commercially faced activities such as SQA's Accreditation Function.
