The SVQ qualifications in Accounting are based on the National Occupational Standards set and published by the independent body AOSG (Accountancy Occupational Standards Group).  AOSG wrote and reviewed the standards after consultation with employers, chartered bodies and training providers.  On 1 April 2008 AOSG handed over the responsibility for Accountancy and related areas to the Financial Services Skills Council (FSSC).

The standards set out a statement of competence which brings together the skills, knowledge and understanding required to undertake specific work activities in accounting functions as well as in the general areas of communication, information technology and health and safety.  The standards provide an accurate and detailed definition of what candidates must know, understand and be able to do in order to be judged competent.

SQA awards the SVQ Accounting level 2 and SVQ Accounting level 3.

The SVQ Accounting at level 4 is jointly offered by AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) and other awarding bodies within Scotland – further details are available on AAT’s website: www.aat.org.uk
