Summary of Course content

The Course content provides a broad, experiential introduction to hairdressing. The focus is on experiencing the salon environment to learn about the different roles and responsibilities in hairdressing and to begin to develop vocational skills and knowledge. Practical experience of general salon duties to support stylists and assisting with customer care is included. Specific skills involved in shampooing, conditioning and blow-drying hair are developed and the creative side of hairdressing is also explored, with candidates having the opportunity to experiment with style ideas. The Course content places emphasis throughout all Units on the employability skills and attitudes which will help to prepare candidates for the workplace.

Summary of content of each Unit

  • Hairdressing: Salon Awareness
Candidates will develop an awareness of the various roles, responsibilities and career opportunities in hairdressing. They will also learn about health and safety in the salon and the demands of the job of a trainee hairdresser.
  • Hairdressing: Working in the Salon
Candidates will learn to carry out practical tasks in customer care, reception and maintaining a safe and hygienic work area. They will also learn more specific skills in shampooing and blow-drying techniques.  This will be done in a realistic context, with emphasis on developing general employability skills such as following instructions carefully, seeking feedback and using this to improve skills.
  • Hairdressing: Employability Skills
Candidates will have the opportunity in this Unit to consider the general skills and attitudes identified by employers as important in hairdressing. They will evaluate their own performance in these skills in a range of practical activities. They will plan and set goals for improvement in order to enhance their employability profile.
  • Hairdressing: Creativity
Candidates will explore current trends and develop their own ideas and interpretation of current trends.  They will plan the resources and support they will need to create their own style on a mannequin head.  This will help to build confidence, skills and a sense of the importance of creativity in hairdressing.

Assessment approaches

Assessment in this Course will be based mainly on a range of practical activities carried out in a salon environment. Performance evidence will be supported by tutor observation checklists. Candidates will also complete self-evaluation reviews and gather specified information in a folio.

Each Unit will be supported by a National Assessment Bank (NAB) item which will provide an assessment package and will exemplify the national standard.

Learning and teaching materials

Learning and teaching support packs have been produced by the Scottish Further Education Unit (SFEU) to support this Course.  These can be accessed via the SFEU website.

Placements, visits, work experience

While work placement in a real salon is not a requirement, it is essential that the Course is delivered in a salon environment. Links with local employers will be valuable. Visits to a real, commercial salon will be of benefit to candidates as will the experience of visiting speakers from salons.

Resource requirements

Centres will require hairdressing salon facilities for each of the Units in the Course. This will include reception facilities as well as styling units, styling chairs, trolleys, back-wash basins and chairs. The salon facility will need to be equipped with sufficient hairdressing equipment, tools and products which should include hand held and wall mounted driers, tongs, straighteners, brushes, combs, sectioning clips, pins, rollers, kirbies, a range of shampoos and conditioners, a selection of styling and finishing products, gowns, towels and sterilising equipment to give candidates plenty of opportunity for practice and assessment. Mannequin heads will be required for the Hairdressing: Creativity Unit and appropriate safe storage facilities will be needed for all equipment and materials.

Personal protective clothing will be essential for all candidates. This may include overalls and gloves. Centres should carry out risk assessments for all activities as required.

Progression

This Course may provide candidates with opportunities to progress to:
  • an SVQ/NVQ in hairdressing
  • a full-time National Certificate Course in Hairdressing in Further Education colleges
  • suitable training/employment
