MASTHEAD: Core Skills

Core Skills at West Lothian College

West Lothian College has put Core Skills at the heart of the curriculum.  George Hotchkiss, Sector Head at The Hub, explains how it works:

'Core Skills are central to the curriculum at West Lothian College and, as a general guide, we aim to enhance Core Skills by one level within each programme.  Communication, Numeracy, and IT are delivered, usually on an integrated basis, in the Hub, an open-plan learning environment.  Working with Others and Problem Solving Units are, generally, delivered through integrated vocational learning.

'Lecturers and Learning Assistants collaborate to support learning.  Learners start their Core Skills programme by working with staff to determine their existing Core Skills and define their learning priorities, in relation to their programme of study, and aspirations beyond this.  Close communication between Core Skills staff, guidance, and learning support, is important, as this generates pro-active, achievement-orientated support.'

Engagement, motivation and transferability of skills are encouraged through contextualisation of the learning experience, and through welcoming, purposeful, learning-centred relationships.
