The Certificate

This course will give you the opportunity to get an SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority) National Unit in English for Speakers of Other Languages.

The certificate will say what you can do at the end of the course. At this level there are five ESOL Units which are available from August 07:


ESOL: An Introduction to Beginner English Literacies 1 (F1AF 08)

For this Unit you will learn to:

  • Use and understand simple English to obtain goods and services.
  • Understand written English that you see all around you everyday.
  • Understand simple numbers.


ESOL: An Introduction to Beginner English Literacies 2 (F1AG 08)

For this Unit you will learn to:

  • Use and understand simple English for personal and social purposes.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of simple written texts.
  • Produce simple written English on lines.


ESOL: Everyday Communication (DV34 08)

For this Unit you will learn to:

  • Use and understand simple English for personal and social purposes.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of simple written texts.
  • Produce simple written English on lines.


ESOL: Transactional Contexts (F1AD 08)

For this Unit you will learn to:

  • Communicate orally in English for transactional purposes.
  • Complete a form giving basic personal information.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of spoken English in a transactional context.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of written English in a transactional context.


ESOL: Work and Study-related Contexts (F1AE 08)

For this Unit you will learn to:

  • Communicate orally in English for vocational purposes.
  • Produce written English for vocational purposes.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of spoken English in a vocational context.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of written English in a vocational context.


These five Units replace the Beginners’ English Unit at Access 2 (DA9M 08). The finish date for the Beginners English Unit is 31st July 1008. Centres may therefore continue to offer it until that date.

Beginners’ English (DA9M 08)

For this Unit you will learn to:

  • Exchange simple personal information
  • Demonstrate understanding of simple written information
  • Form written words correctly


Assessment

There is no examination at the end of this course but you will be assessed during the course. The assessment will be a small part of the class activities and you will have a number of opportunities to do the assessment tasks.


Appeal

If you disagree with an assessment decision you can tell your tutor/teacher you want to appeal. Your centre has an appeals procedure.
