Update July 2008

The Art and Design Qualifications Design and Development team have developed the proposed draft framework for the new NQ Group Award in Art and Design.

At this key stage in the development process, SQA now invites feedback and comments from colleges and other interested parties. Please complete the attached feedback form and return this to Jonathan Gillies by 31st July 2008.

NQGA Art and Design Development Programme

SQA is currently taking forward the development of NQ Group Awards in Art and Design. The aims of the development are to:

  • develop a new suite of NQ Group Awards in the form of National Certificates and National Progression Awards
  • review, update, revise and rationalise Units within the NQ Unit Catalogue
  • develop or revise servicing Units
  • develop assessment support materials where required, including e-learning and e-assessment

An initial review was carried out in 2006 of Unit provision at this level the initial scoping exercise identified a number of key gaps and issues relating to the current Unit catalogue.

  • an imbalance in the prevalence of design versus expressive art units
  • a primary focus on the development of analytical drawing skills
  • areas of contemporary practice (sustainability, entrepreneurial skills, legislation etc) and new media approaches (digital art forms, copyright etc) lacking
  • sketchbook development processes underdeveloped

These issues will be looked at as part of the development of National Certificate and National Progression Award development. The timelines for the development are given below.
