Construction Crafts

The Skills for Work (SfW) Construction Crafts Intermediate 1 Course (SCQF level 4) gives candidates an insight into several important construction trades (Bricklaying, Decorative Painting, Carpentry and Joinery, and Plumbing) and helps them to make informed choices regarding a career in construction.

The SfW Construction Crafts Intermediate 2 Course (SCQF level 5) provides a basis for progression into further education, or for moving directly into training or employment within the construction sector.

Both Courses start to develop the general skills, practical skills, knowledge, understanding, and employability skills that are needed throughout the sector.

Why deliver this qualification?

The Skills for Work Courses develop both specific vocational skills and the generic skills which are valued by employers (eg setting goals, reflecting, and learning from experience).

These qualifications provide possibilities to develop school/college and industry partnerships.

Who does the qualification suit?

The SfW Construction Crafts Intermediate 1 and 2 Courses are experiential, practical and candidate-centred. They are suitable for school candidates in S3 and above with an aptitude and enthusiasm for practical crafts work.

Intermediate 2 is suitable for those who have previous experience of construction crafts at Intermediate 1.

The Courses are also suitable for adult candidates who are seeking to enhance their employability and to develop introductory vocational skills in the construction sector.

Access

Entry is at the discretion of the centre.

Progression

The SfW Construction Crafts Intermediate 1 and 2 Courses may provide candidates with opportunities to progress to Scottish Vocational Qualifications in construction crafts, to further education, or to training/employment.

What approvals are needed?

Centres with devolved authority are eligible to seek approval through their own internal approval process.

Centres without devolved authority will have to come forward for approval and should contact the Business Development Team for guidance in completing the combined CA1/SA1 form.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence.

How to assess

Assessment is based on a range of practical workshop activities, supported by assessor observation checklists and candidate self-checking.

In the Employability Skills Unit, candidates carry out self-evaluation on a range of skills, review their progress, and identify action points.

Each Unit is supported by a National Assessment Bank (NAB) item which provides an assessment package and exemplifies the national standard.
