HNC/HND Fitness, Health and Exercise

The following awards are now being delivered by centres:

  • HNC Fitness, Health and Exercise – G866 15
  • HND Fitness, Health and Exercise – G867 16

These Courses were devised under the new HN Design Principles. It would then follow that in year 1/HNC there is now one Graded Unit and in year 2/HND there is a two credit Graded Unit. These Graded Units are designed to allow candidates to integrate their knowledge of the mandatory Units within this Group Award.

Following validation of this award the Qualifications Design Team was reconstituted and became the Qualifications Support Team. The task of this working group is to monitor the implementation of the award and to ensure that it remains fit for purpose. This allows delivering centres to reflect on the award and to provide comment where appropriate.

These awards have been in place since summer 2006 and ongoing work is taking place on exemplar material for HNC. The HND exemplars are also well under way. SQA appreciates the support of their writers in this task. Delivering staff can assess all exemplars relating to this award via the secure area of our website. Co-ordinators within the centres will be able to assist with this process

The HNC/HND Fitness, Health and Exercise award is now in a period of maintenance where the Qualification Support Team will regularly monitor feedback from delivering centres and the sports industry. This will enable issues raised to be addressed either by minor change, revision of an existing Unit or adding other Units to the options within the frameworks.

In November 2006 all delivering centres were invited to an update meeting in Glasgow to hear from the Senior External Verifier and the Chair of the Qualifications Support Team on issues which surround the delivery of these awards. Centres are encouraged to read the report which the Senior External Verifier for Sport has written.

The Qualification Support Team (QST) is in place and will monitor the feedback from centres and consider what help and advice may need to be given.

REPS (Register of Exercise Professionals)

The Sector Skills Council (SkillsActive) have mapped the award to allow a route to registration at REPS level 2 and this will be placed within the Arrangements document along with a possible route to level 3 registration.  Additional work will be undertaken by the QST to ensure that this will happen.

Launch event

A formal launch event for the new HNC/HND Fitness, Health and Exercise is planned for March 2007. An invitation will be sent to all centres.

HND Sport and Recreation Management

The new HND Sport and Recreation Management award has successfully gone through validation and the Development Team are working hard to provide centres with the Arrangements document.

The majority of the HNC mandatory exemplars are currently available on the SQA secure website and it is the intention of the Development Team to have all the HND mandatory exemplars ready for centres for the start of the new academic session.

The introduction of the Graded Units will provide candidates with the opportunity to explore current issues that are impacting on the industry.  Candidates have a diverse and exciting range of optional Units to explore including Football and Golf club Management, Sport Sponsorship and Public Relations, Exercise for Children. The Course is designed to enable centres to offer tailor-made programmes to meet the needs of their student population while maintaining the business flavour of the mandatory Units.
