SQA commissioned several pieces of research in order to inform and expand our understanding of attitudes and awareness to Core Skills amongst candidates, employers and higher education institutions and to locate Core Skills developments in a European and international context.
Survey on embedded Core Skills
- 4mostplus research paper in development with the University of Stirling to reseach Workplace Core Skills. The Core Skills Assessment Panel wished to follow up previous research in exploring candidates’ awareness of embedded Core Skills. This previous research (available from SQA’s website) showed that an unconvinced population thought that these skills are not enhanced or delivered and remained non-transferable skills hidden in the curriculum. This current research included looking at the extent to which candidates were aware of Core Skills, whether there was any development in Core Skills or whether current practice only consisted of assessing existing skills. The Panel also wanted to gauge the added value provided by embedded Core Skills and the transferability/relevance to other situations as perceived by the learners.
