Foundation level 50 minutes assessing grades 6 and 5
General level 50 minutes assessing grades 4 and 3
Credit level 50 minutes assessing grades 2 and 1

Reading questions will require either a short answer (a few words), or a restricted response (a few sentences or a paragraph).

Writing

Foundation level one hour 15 minutes assessing grades 6–1
General level one hour 15 minutes assessing grades 6–1
Credit level one hour 15 minutes assessing grades 6–1

Writing questions will require an extended response.

The Talking Element, which involves the candidate in discussion and individual talk, is assessed internally by the teacher/lecturer.

For each of Reading and Writing, there is equal weighting for performance in the examination and in the folio. The overall award for the subject is the mean of the Element grades for Reading, Writing and Talking, each Element having equal weighting.
