The HNC in Health Care at SCQF level 7 is designed to allow candidates to progress to employment, further study for an HND or to a range of study options in higher education. Candidates will develop a wide range of practical skills and could potentially articulate into the Branch Programme of a nursing degree/diploma and this should allow progression into second year of the Programme.
This qualification is available through colleges, and they can provide further advice on progression.
Use the tabs below to open each section individually. Alternatively you can show all the sections.
The HNC in Health Care will meet the needs of those working in health care support roles.
Most Units can be delivered through open/e-learning but the entire qualification cannot be delivered through these methods alone due to the practical Unit, Health Care: Practice Experience, which assesses occupational competence.
The HNC in Health Care is suitable for health care support workers wishing to support their practice in their current role or wishing to progress to higher education and a nursing qualification.
It is also suitable for full-time candidates wishing to enter into a career in health care.
Entry to the HNC in Health Care is at the discretion of the centre.
However, centres must ensure that candidates are either working in a suitable health care environment or that they undertake a work placement in an appropriate setting.
The HNC in Health Care allows candidates to work within a variety of health care settings as Senior Health Care Assistants or to progress onto the nursing degree programme.
There is opportunity for all candidates to develop their Core Skills throughout their course of study, specifics of which are detailed within individual Units.
This qualification allows candidates to demonstrate their ability to work as part of a team and to work within a multidisciplinary environment.
Candidates are enabled to relate theory to practice and to reflect on the skills required to become a registered practitioner within the health care field.
Centres with devolved authority are eligible to seek approval through their own internal approval process.
Centres without devolved authority will have to come forward for approval and should contact the Business Development Team for guidance in completing the combined CA1/SA1 form.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence.
Ongoing Course assessment will apply.
The practical Unit: Health Care: Practice Experience assesses occupational competence.
