Step 2: Marking

The marking scheme is finalised by the examiners (experienced markers who quality assure the marking) after looking at a wide range of candidates' responses to the paper. Scripts are marked by experienced teachers or lecturers who are recruited and trained by SQA. The packets of scripts allocated to each marker are chosen randomly, and normally a marker will not receive more than one packet from any one centre. In addition, a marker's allocation will exclude packets from centres where the marker may know any candidate. (SQA is currently developing marking quidelines to include illustations of marking in a range of subjects on an interactive website.) The marking can be done at markers' homes, or at a central marking event.
