During Your Exams

The people responsible for supervising the exams on SQA's behalf are called 'Invigilators'. Invigilators are not school or college staff. Their job is to stay in the exam room to make sure that the exam goes ahead according to the rules and that the rules are applied fairly.

Desks

In most schools/colleges you will be allocated a desk/seat number for each exam. Make sure you know this before the exam. It is particularly important that you sit at your allocated desk if you are taking any exams which involve an objective test. This is because in these exams you will be provided with your own personalised answer sheet which already has your name, SCN and centre details printed on it. You will be asked to check these details before the start of the exam.

If you're late

If you are late for an exam, you must report to the teacher or lecturer in charge of SQA exams in your centre, who will decide whether or not you may enter the exam room. If you are not allowed to go into the room, the reasons for your lateness will be reported to SQA and may be taken into consideration.

Things you must not take into the examination room

Mobile and WAP-enabled phones are strictly prohibited and must not be taken into the exam room. If you are found in possession of a mobile phone or any digital audio device, eg MP3 player, or if you take this equipment into the room and it beeps or rings, your exam entry may be cancelled.

Other things you must not take into the exam are:

  • music/MP3 player
  • a calculator or electronic dictionary which contains inappropriate data
  • a calculator case
  • a spellchecker
  • a pencil case
  • books, notes, sketches, paper of any kind, or any other unauthorised aid

If you mistakenly take any unauthorised aid into the exam room, you should give it to the Invigilator for safe-keeping until after the exam. If you have a bag, ask the Invigilator where you may place this.

In the exam room

Check that the exam paper given to you is the right one. If it is not the paper you expected, please tell the Invigilator. Read the instructions on the front of each question paper, and make sure you follow them carefully.

You should complete your details on the front of the exam paper or booklet.

If you need extra paper, ask the Invigilator. Remember to put your name, SCN and school or college name on it at the end of the exam. Put any extra sheets inside your answer book.

You may use a calculator in certain exams, your teacher or lecturer will be able to advise you. You must not share with anyone else.

Blank pages in the question paper

Pages in the question paper which do not contain questions or instructions will have the words BLANK PAGE printed in bold in the centre of the page. If you find a page which is completely blank, please bring this to the attention of the Invigilator.
The question paper ends where you see the words END OF QUESTION PAPER.
