The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is an Executive Agency of the Department for Transport (DfT). One of its responsibilities is the issue of Engineer Officer (Yacht) Certificates of Competency.
For details of the above and other statutory certificates, you should refer to the appropriate publications issued from time to time by the MCA, available from HMSO bookshops. The relevant publications in this case are:
- MCA Marine Information Notice MIN 80 (M) – Written examination dates for (Yacht) certificates of competency issued by the Department for Transport - Maritime and Coastguard Agency each year.
- MCA Marine Guidance Note MGN 156 (M) – Certificates of Competency or Marine Engine Operator Licences for service as an Engineer Officer on commercially and privately operated yachts and sail training vessels.
The written examinations for the Engineer Officer (Yacht) Certificates of Competency are administered for and on behalf of the MCA by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).
Examination centres are listed in the above MGN and MIN – these may change from time to time. Up to date information is available from SQA.
The examinations are prepared and moderated by people involved in the industry and/or training, and approved by the MCA.
