Marker

A Marker marks candidates’ work in line with detailed marking instructions and in accordance with SQA policy and procedures.

The prime role is to ensure consistent application of standards when marking candidate evidence.

These activities will be under the direction of the Principal Assessor and staff from SQA’s Qualification Development and Operations business directorates as appropriate.

The three year delivery requirement may be reduced at the discretion of SQA if an applicant wishes to mark at a different level from that which s/he has already marked satisfactorily.


Key Performance Measures for Markers

Each year, on completion of the duties outlined in the Marker contract specification, the Marker will be measured against the following key performance measures and informed of the outcome in relation to their performance in that year.

1. Complete marker training to the required grade
2. Mark agreed script allocation in line with detailed marking instructions
3. Submit marks, return marked scripts and complete administrative tasks within agreed timescales
4. Submit a marker report on completion of marking allocation, providing feedback on exam performance


Fees for Markers

The rate varies according to the paper that is marked. Details will be provided if you are invited to mark. Fees are paid on a per script marked basis.


Procedure for New Markers

If you are interested in joining us as a Marker, please complete the Appointee Application Form (296 KB).

You must meet the selection criteria for the subject/level that you wish to mark.

You will then be added to our reserve marker list for that subject/level and will be invited to join the marking team as and when a vacancy occurs in that team.

We refresh our teams on an annual basis so opportunities arise for new markers every year.
