Core Skills are essential if individuals are to meet both their personal needs and the needs of society. Individuals who can analyse and solve problems, communicate well, use information technology, and work with others effectively, are well-equipped to assume the active, flexible and responsible role which modern workplaces need and society expects.

Centres should be aware that the last date for candidate entries for the predecessor Workplace Core Skills Units was 31 July 2008. Candidates have a three year period to complete their Core Skill qualification, so the last date centres will be able to provide result for certification of the predecessor Workplace Core Skills Units will be July 2011.
From the 1 August 2008 all new candidates must be entered for the revised Workplace Core Skills Units. All revised Unit specifications and Unit codes are available on the SQA Accreditation website.

The predecessor NQ Core Skills Units have now entered their completion period, which means existing centres that were approved to offer the NQ Core Skills Units prior to 1st August 2008:

Some centres have been in touch with us to seek advice and clarification regarding the Assessment Support Packs for the revised Core Skills Units, and in light of this feedback we will be updating these packs and issuing further guidance within the next few months.
SQA Academy was used during the consultation and development period of the Core Skills refresh. Now that this refresh is complete, we have removed the Core Skills material from SQA Academy. Centres seeking information on Core Skills should look to this section of SQA’s main website as the central reference point: www.sqa.org.uk/coreskills
