Practical Makes Perfect - Scottish VQ Heroes 2009

Scottish Government Minister for Schools and Skills, Keith Brown MSP presenting the Scottish VQ Hero

Craig Forrest, a student from Clydebank College and Laura McIver, front of house team leader at the Red Deer pub in Cumbernauld were named Scotland’s VQ Heroes as part of VQ Day.

The VQ Hero Awards were part of VQ Day, which took place on Wednesday 24 June, a UK-wide celebration of vocational achievement and the many paths to success taken by learners of all ages. The Awards demonstrate the talent, commitment and rigorous standards involved in gaining a vocational qualification.

Craig and Laura were presented with their Awards at the Scottish Parliament, by the Minister for Schools and Skills, Keith Brown, MSP.  Also attending the event were their families and representatives from Clydebank College, VT Group and Mitchells & Butler Scottish Vintage Inns.

Presenting the Award, Keith Brown, MSP, Minister for Schools and Skills, said: 'I am delighted to see that Craig and Laura's achievements are being recognised today.  They have both demonstrated great commitment and dedication to their craft and are a credit to themselves and their families and an inspiration to us all.  Their achievements demonstrate the value of vocational qualifications which provide flexible, up to date qualifications that reflect employers' needs and help drive Scotland's economy.'

Dr Gill Stewart, SQA Director of Qualifications Development said, 'SQA are delighted to support the VQ Hero Awards in Scotland as part of VQ Day. SQA is committed to providing vocational qualifications that are inclusive, provide clear progression pathways and recognise individuals' achievements.'

A HND Make-up Artistry student, Craig was selected by the judges for the high level of creativity shown not just in class work, but in both Regional and National competitions where he has achieved a high level of success.  Craig’s determination, passion and enthusiasm for his art has been shown time and time again through work experience in film, television, theatre and fashion.  Since gaining his qualification, Craig has made his stamp in the world of theatre – touring with Scottish Opera and Opera North up and down the country.

On receiving news of the Award win, Craig said: 'I am totally honoured to receive this Award out of all of the entries submitted. It is great receiving recognition for my efforts and I am excited about my future career! I’d like to thank all those at Clydebank College that helped me throughout my studies – it will never be forgotten.'

John Kerr, Operations Director at independent education foundation Edge and a member of the judging panel, added: 'It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to honour people like Craig and Laura. They are fantastic examples of the progression and opportunities that vocational qualifications can offer, living proof that there are many paths to success and an inspiration to us all. They are just two of the millions who take a vocational qualification every year as a stepping stone to a brighter future – VQ Day celebrates these learners’ achievements and those who help them gain this success.'
