Understanding Standards
The Understanding Standards Website explains and illustrates the assessment principles underpinning SQA Courses. It has two objectives:
- easy access to comprehensive and definitive assessment guidelines
- a way for teachers and lecturers to develop their marking skills online
Users are invited to mark and comment on real examples of learner work. When these have been submitted, the user can see how their marking compares with Senior Examiners in the subject (and so with the national standard).
The balance between guidelines and exemplars depends on the nature of the subject. SQA Examiners have agreed on a package that provides the greatest insight into the marking approach and standard for each Course covered.
The website is specifically designed for use by teaching staff, so it assumes subject knowledge and some familiarity with the various assessment arrangements.
