The Professional Development Award (PDA) is about contributing to the strategic process in organisations. It covers different strategic concepts, establishing a strategic position and methods of working out a strategy — particularly the production of a strategic plan.

The qualification is available through colleges.

Why deliver this qualification

The qualification is:

  • nationally recognised
  • suitable for managers in all business and industry sectors
  • vehicle for candidates to progress to other management qualifications
  • suitable for work based achievement

The two Units in the award overlap and it may well be possible to integrate delivery.

Who does this qualification suit

The PDA in Strategic Management is suitable for:

  • middle managers
  • departmental managers
  • aspiring middle managers

Access

Access to this award will be at the discretion of the centre. There should be no barriers to entry and the award should be open to all candidates who have a reasonable chance of achieving it.

It would, however, be beneficial if candidates had good written and oral communications skills.

Progression

The PDA in Strategic Management will offer progression to the HNC/Diploma in Management and Leadership and SVQs in Management up to SVQ level 5.

Approval

Centres with devolved authority are eligible to seek approval through their own internal approval process.

Centres without devolved authority will have to come forward for approval and should contact the Business Development Team for guidance in completing the combined CA1/SA1 form.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements as outlined in the guide to approval.

How to assess

Assessment for both Units making up this award is open book. The Units lend themselves to holistic assessment. The Outcomes and their associated Knowledge and/or Skills items in the Units are very closely linked

Candidates may generate evidence for the Units in a number of different ways and should be encouraged to provide evidence in a format which suits their particular situation.

The Units lend themselves to an assessment approach whereby candidates generate evidence during the delivery of the Units and gather it together in a portfolio; this could be either paper based or electronic. A portfolio based approach like this can facilitate combined assessment between both Units.

Management: Strategic Change — H1S6 35
Management: Develop Strategic Plans — H1S7 35

Lapsing

This Group Award has been replaced by GF93 48 and finishes 31/07/2015.

Centres should note that when a Group Award is entered into its lapsing period, the following will apply:

  • the Group Award will be deleted from the relevant catalogue
  • the Group Award Arrangement document will remain until the qualification reaches its finish date at which point it will be removed form SQA website and archived
  • no new centres may be approved to offer the Group Award
  • centres should only enter candidates whom they expect to complete the Group Award during the defined lapsing period of 3 years.
