Higher Construction

Higher in Architectural Technology

The Higher qualification in Architectural Technology covers building design, site surveying, and manual and computer-aided construction drawing. Learners gain skills in making their designs responsive to social, cultural and environmental issues, and develop visual awareness in meeting the public requirements of buildings and the designed environment. Learners gain understanding and knowledge of the properties and uses of materials, building structures, and the sequence of building operations. They learn how heat, light, sound and ventilation affect people and buildings, and develop skills in problem-solving, communication, investigation, report writing and teamwork.

Higher in Building Construction

The Higher qualification in Building Construction covers site establishment and substructure, superstructure, and components and finishes. Learners are introduced to domestic construction technology — what buildings are made of and how they fit together. They gain knowledge of construction materials and how they are put together to form the different elements of a building.

The course focuses on function and performance, and on the importance of planning the layout and workings of a building site. Learners develop an understanding of the order and sequencing of building operations, as well as the benefits of complying with recognised construction industry practice and legislation. In addition, they gain skills in understanding, interpreting and producing sketches.

The Higher Construction Course is available at SCQF level 6.
