The Higher qualification in Media Studies offers in-depth analysis of ideologies underlying messages communicated by the media industries to their audiences. Learners consider the reasons behind the messages: for example, to attract a target audience for commercial viability.
The course offers knowledge and understanding of how individuals in an audience read texts differently. Learners study how different audiences take out of media texts meanings at variance from those intended by the producers. They also examine how legal, budgetary and technological constraints shape a text.
The Higher Media Studies Course is at SCQF level 6.
