Candidate FAQs

Can I get Unit descriptors for Units I have achieved?

Unit descriptors are available on the SQA website, Unit Searches for:

Or you can e-mail customer@sqa.org.uk, please include the title of the Units and codes and we can send you the Unit descriptors.

Can I study part time or by distance learning?

Please contact the school/college/training provider as they decide how to deliver the qualifications.

Can I view my qualifications online?

You can register for MySQA - free online service, which allows you to see all of your results online.

You register using your Scottish Candidate Number (SCN) and activate once you receive the activation letter ? this letter will be sent to the address on our system.

You can order Replacement Certificates (If gained prior to 1995 this is your only option) by online or postal application. This takes between 2 ? 3 weeks with a standard charge of 38.

Can you e-mail my exam results?

We only issue results by e-mail for National Qualifications (school exams) at results time, we are unable provide details of any other qualifications by e-mail.

To register to receive your results by text or e-mail you should sign up for MySQA - free online service, which allows you to see all of your results online.

  • use your Scottish Candidate Number (SCN) to sign up for MySQA
  • you will receive an activation letter, sent to the address on our system
  • once you recive this letter you should login to your account and select the text or e-mail option

Please note ? registration through MySQA to receive exam results by e-mail or text closes a few weeks before the exam results are issued

How can I access my qualifications?

How do I change my name on my record?

If you are currently studying you should speak to your school or college as they will be able to change your name if you show them the relevant documentation (please see list below).

If you are not curretly attending school or college, to enable us to process and update your candidate record we are required to obtain the necessary documentation.

You must provide two items from the list below. The documents should be the originals, not photocopies.

  • Passport
  • Drivers Licence
  • Justice of Peace Letter
  • Birth certificate
  • Decree Nisi
  • Marriage/Civil Partnership Certificate
  • Adoption Certificate

All documentation you send to support your request will be returned to you via secure delivery.

If you wish your documents returned by special delivery please post a cheque of 4.50 addressed to the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

How do I compare my Qualifications?

How do I get my Scottish Candidate Number?

Your Scottish Candidate Number (SCN) is displayed directly under your name on your certificate.

If you do not have your SCN you should complete the Candidate Enquiry Form , this will allow us to locate your records and provide you with your SCN.

Or call us on: 0345 279 1000 and we will confirm your details and then provide you with your SCN Number.

How do I order a replacement certificate?

Replacement certificates can be arranged for a fee of 38.00 and this service normally takes between 2-3 weeks.

If you have completed it electronically and are paying by credit/debit card, you can email the form to: certification@sqa.org.uk

The replacement certificate will also show Core skills, SQA Credits & SCQF credit points if these are applicable to your qualification/s.

How do I update my address details?

If you are currently studying your school/college or training provider will have to change your address - this must be done by the centre who registered you for the qualification you are studying.

If you are no longer studying, we will require more information to allow us to locate your Candidate record. Please complete our Candidate Enquiry Form. We will then be able to complete your change of address.

How much do I need to pay to take a course?

You should contact the school/college/training Provider to discuss course fees, as we do not set these fees.

I completed the first year of my HND – why have I not received my certificate?

Completing the first year of the HND would not automatically entitle you to a certificate.

You will only receive a certificate when we receive all the results for the HND or when the college enter you for a HNC Group Award. If all relevant results are present you will then be issued with an HNC Certificate.

Please contact your college to be entered for a HNC Group Award.

My name is misspelt on my certificate?

Please contact the school or college and inform the student records department or SQA Co-ordinator. They will update the details sent to SQA and order a replacement certificate on your behalf.

My qualifications from university are not showing on my SQA certificate

We do not certificate qualifications gained at university. You should contact the university to gain certification for any qualification you have studied there.

My school/college appealed one of my exam results and my university has not heard anything?

Please contact your school or college as they will need to contact the Appeals Team at SQA on your behalf to investigate this matter further.

My School/College made an appeal on my behalf, but I have had no feedback or result?

This information is issued to your school/college and they should give you the feedback or result.

Why are all of my past qualifications not showing on my certificate (Summary of Attainment)?

Your Detailed Record of Attainment shows the qualification you are currently being certificated for, including a list of the Units.

The summary of attainment may make reference to past qualifications/Group Awards but will not certificate them again in full unless a replacement certificate is requested.

Why have I not received my certificate?

There may be entries/qualifications on your record that have still to be resulted/removed before a certificate can be issued.

Or your certificate may have been issued to an incorrect/previous address. If so please contact your school/college/training provider for more information.

Why will my school not allow me to sit a specific Higher?

You must discuss this with your school/college directly. We write, develop and certificate qualification; however we do not run the courses. It is at the discretion of the school/college to set the entry requirements.
