HNC/HND Mechatronics

The HNC/HND Mechatronics will allow candidates the opportunity to learn and understand the core principles and technologies that underpin Mechatronics. These will be an essential platform for tackling many Mechatronics tasks and developing a more in-depth knowledge of Mechatronics.

This subject will not have alternative assessment guidance for session 2023-24. You should refer to the Group Award/Unit specifications for detailed delivery and assessment information. For general support on delivery and assessment see the HNVQ assessment guidance 2023-24.

Access

As with all SQA qualifications, entry is at the discretion of the centre. Examples of formal entry qualifications include:

  • One Higher from Physics, Technological Studies, Mathematics or Mechatronics, and at least three National 5s, which must include Mathematics, Physics or Technological Studies and English.
  • A National Certificate Group Award in Engineering, Electronics or Electrical Engineering.

Equivalent qualifications or suitable experience may also be accepted for entry.

Employment and progression

There are employment opportunities in manufacturing, service and public sector organisations at mechatronic technician and incorporated engineer level.

The HNC Mechatronics may allow direct entry to the second year of some degree programmes (although only the first year in some other cases). You should contact the relevant university for information.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology is expected to approve the HNC as partially satisfying the underpinning educational requirement for Incorporated Engineer registration.

The HND Mechatronics may allow entry to Year 3 of a degree course, but more typically to Year 1 or 2. You should contact the relevant university for more information.

What you’ll learn

The HNC/HND will also provide you with opportunities to develop sound practical Mechatronics investigation, construction, testing and project skills which are critical to being a good mechatronics technician and/or Incorporated Engineer.

You will gain knowledge, understanding and skills in: electronics, electrical engineering, computer technology, control engineering, and mechanical engineering.

You will also develop your skills in analysis and synthesis, study, evaluation, research, planning, and investigation.
