HNC Information Technology candidate information
The HNC Information Technology award can be used as a foundation to move forward into higher education in many areas that have a hybrid content containing computing as a discipline.
This course provides useful foundations for a successful career in Computing and Information Technology. Key subjects include: Office applications, application development, web planning and development, computer system support and Database design.
You will develop your planning, analysis, synthesis, study and research skills.

On completion of the award you may be able to progress to the HND Information Technology and onto appropriate university courses.
The HNC provides an up to date IT qualification that reflects recent development in IT and enables candidates to gain skills that are in demand in the workplace.
Gaining HNC Information Technology award will enable you to apply for British Computer Society BCS Associate Membership.
As with all SQA qualifications, access is at the discretion of the centre. Examples of formal entry qualifications include:
- Higher or Intermediate 2 Computing or Information Systems.
- Any two relevant National Courses at Higher together with three standard grade passes at level 3 or above.
- An SVQ at level 2 or 3 in Information Technology or other relevant area.
- Relevant National Units at an appropriate level (example: Core Skills Units at Intermediate 1 or 2) combined with any of the above
Different combinations of relevant National Qualifications, Vocational Qualifications and equivalent qualifications from other awarding bodies may also be acceptable, as would suitable vendor qualifications at an appropriate level — for instance, PC passport or ECDL with Core Skills Units at Intermediate 1 or 2.
Suitable work experience may also provide evidence of your skills and knowledge.
