HNC in Management and Leadership

The HNC in Management and Leadership is designed to equip candidates with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for success in current and future employment or progression to further academic and/or professional qualifications.

It allows candidates to develop transferable skills, including Core Skills and a range of operational management and leadership competences

This qualification is available through colleges.

Why deliver this qualification

The HNC in Management and Leadership will meet the employment needs of operational managers in a wide range of businesses.

The qualifications include a wide choice of optional Units that provide candidates with the knowledge and skills to enable them to develop practical, supervisory and management skills. Candidates will be able to select relevant optional Units to suit their intended or actual work role.

The HNC develops planning, analysis, study and research skills, and critical and evaluative thinking.

Who does this qualification suit

The HNC in Management and Leadership is suitable for a wide range of candidates including:

  • adult returners to education
  • candidates employed in management positions who wish to enhance their career prospects
  • candidates who are aspiring managers and wish to move into a management position

Access

Entry is at the discretion of the centre. Examples of formal entry qualifications include:

  • appropriate groupings of National Units
  • any two National Qualifications at Higher together with three Standard Grade passes at 3 or above
  • an SVQ at level 2
  • relevant work experience

Different combinations of relevant National Qualifications, vocational qualifications and equivalent qualifications from other awarding bodies may also be acceptable.

Progression

The HNC in Management and Leadership will provide a platform allowing progression to employment or further study at an equivalent or higher level.

It covers a range of subject topics which are relevant to modern business practices and to university degree programmes.

Approval

Centres with devolved authority are eligible to seek approval through their own internal approval process.

Centres without devolved authority will have to come forward for approval and should contact the Business Development Team for guidance in completing the combined CA1/SA1 form.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements as outlined in the guide to approval.

How to assess

Ongoing Course assessment will apply. Each individual Unit specification gives detailed information on the Evidence Requirements and approaches to assessment for each Unit.

As well as more traditional assessment, there are now opportunities for candidates to use ICT to generate their evidence eg Web 2.0 techniques such as blogs, wikis, podcasts, social bookmarking sites and presentation software.

For the HNC Management and Leadership, Graded Unit 1 is assessed by an investigation.

Interactive activities are available to support some of the Units.

Any other information

For candidates where English is not their first language it is recommended that they possess English for Speakers of other Languages (ESOL) level 5 or a score of 5.5 in IELTS.

Good support materials are available for the mandatory Units apart from the Graded Unit which is designed to integrate the knowledge and skills across the award. Support materials include candidate work books and interactive activities.

Jointly certificated by SQA and Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

Lapsing

Arrangements Documents

These group Awards has been replaced by GF5V 15/GF6G 48 and will go into their lapsing period on the 31/07/2013, finishing 31/07/2016.

Centres should note that when a Group Award is entered into its lapsing period, the following will apply:

  • the Group Award will be deleted from the relevant catalogue
  • the Group Award Arrangement document will remain until the qualification reaches its finish date at which point it will be removed form SQA website and archived
  • no new centres may be approved to offer the Group Award

centres should only enter candidates whom they expect to complete the Group Award during the defined lapsing period of 3 years (HNC) and 4 years (HND)
