Wider Achievement Qualifications

With the growing focus on developing fully rounded individuals and providing more options for students, SQA have drawn upon their unrivalled expertise to create a portfolio of qualifications which provide recognition for wider achievement activities.

The qualifications help schools deliver BTC4 – Skills for Learning, Skills for Life and Skills for Work – and smooth the transition to CFE delivery.

SQA’s Approach

We aim to provide qualifications to meet the needs of all potential student groups. There is a large suite of options at the heart of the portfolio to suit your students and your centre, from SCQF Levels 3 to 6.

These are nationally recognised qualifications, backed by the reassurance of SQA’s rigour, support and value, and additional delivery resources from a wide range of providers including Education Scotland.

Put simply, for wider achievement SQA brings:

  • The widest choice and progression options
  • Assistance to guide you through your selection
  • Greatest value and support
  • Nationally recognised qualifications

Creative Timetabling

Our centres are packaging Wider Achievement qualifications together in creative ways to offer a fulfilling and deliverable experience for candidates. The size and nature of selected SQA Awards makes them suitable for delivery from S1 upwards. There are various direct and indirect progression routes, and some qualifications can also build on non-SQA wider achievement awards such as the Saltire Award and the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

  • One example is a school delivering the NPA in Enterprise and Employability alongside a Skills for Work course.
  • NPA Dance and Leadership Award are being timetabled together for one cohort.
  • Achievement of SQA Employability Award or an SQA Personal Development Unit comprises 50% of a Steps to Work Award at both SCQF Level 3 and 4.
  • Two qualifications can be achieved from six Units. How? As NPA Enterprise & Employability and Personal Development share two Units, both awards can be achieved on completion of just six Units.
