QCF Certificates in Computer Games Development

The Computer Games Development Certificates at QCF levels 1, 2 and 3 are supported by complete packages of online learning, teaching and assessment materials.

The Computer Games Development Certificate at QCF level 1 provides learners with entry level skills in computer games planning and design. They will find out how to acquire and assemble media assets for use in computer games, and work with different games development environments.

The Computer Games Development Certificate at QCF level 2 provides learners with intermediate level skills in computer games planning and design. Learners will develop their creativity and communication skills through learning about digital media creation and design processes. They will also expand their knowledge of computer games design methodologies, computer games development environments, and computer games platforms, environments and genres.

The Computer Games Development Certificate at QCF level 3 provides learners with higher level skills in computer games planning and design. Learners will expand their knowledge of the computer hardware in gaming technologies and the graphics and sound technology used by various gaming platforms. They will also develop investigative skills by analysing emerging technologies, evaluation skills through learning about different design methodologies, and communication skills through planning and delivering a promotional event. Learners will also discover how to legally acquire and produce media assets for use in computer games and how to assemble media assets using a computer games environment to produce a working game.

Who does this qualification suit

Access to the Certificates is at the discretion of the centre, and each Certificate is suitable for a wide range of candidates:

Level Appropriate for: Access
1 Young people who wish to explore various gaming platforms and game genres and to understand the stages and effort required in developing games for the computer industry. No previous knowledge of computers is required. It would, however be advantageous if candidates possessed basic IT skills.
2 Young people who wish to expand their knowledge of the underlying concepts and fundamental principles involved in computer games planning and design. It would, however be advantageous if candidates possessed IT skills and an interest in the computer games industry. This may be evidenced by candidates having achieved the Certificate in Computer Games Development QCF level 1.
3 Young people who wish to work in the games or creative technology industry.

It would, however be advantageous if candidates possessed IT skills and an interest in the computer games industry.

This may be evidenced by candidates having achieved the Certificate in Computer Games Development QCF level 2.

Progression

On completion of level 1 learners could progress to Computer Games Development Certificate at QCF level 2. On completion of level 2 learners could progress to Computer Games Development Certificate at QCF level 3.

How to assess

E-assessment of digital portfolio.

An assessor need not be present. If an assessor is not present then an expert witness may confirm that it is the learner who is building the portfolio.

Structure of SQA level 1 Computer Games Development Certificate

Learners must complete all three mandatory Units at level 1:

  • Computer Games Media Assets — FM4D 55 (SQA code)
  • Computer Games Development — FM4E 55 (SQA code)

On completion learners will have achieved 120 guided learning hours.

Structure of SQA level 2 Computer Games Development Certificate

Learners must complete all three mandatory Units at level 2:

  • Computer Games Design — FM48 54 (SQA code)
  • Computer Games Media Assets — FM49 54 (SQA code)
  • Computer Games Development — FM4A 54 (SQA code)

On completion learners will have achieved 120 guided learning hours.

Structure of SQA level 3 Computer Games Development Certificate

Learners must complete all three mandatory Units at level 3:
