Advanced Highers allow learners to take the skills, knowledge and understanding they have already acquired from previous study to a deeper and more challenging level.
The Courses are intellectually challenging and learners can develop higher-order skills such as investigation, research and analysis, extended essay-writing, and independent and critical thinking.
The fundamental features and characteristics of current Advanced Higher Courses will be preserved in the new and revised Courses. Learners have the opportunity to develop and use independent study skills, and work with significantly less supervision and with more autonomy. Achieving an Advanced Higher shows that learners have a mature approach to learning and are capable of working on their own initiative.
Advanced Highers will continue to be recognised by Scottish universities for entry to degree programmes along with Highers. They may also allow learners to go straight into the second year of a degree programme or to do an Honours degree in three years in a Scottish university through a fast-track process. Advanced Higher Courses are also highly regarded by higher education institutions (HEIs) in other parts of the UK for entry to degree programmes. (Currently, Advanced Higher Courses attract more UCAS tariff points than A-levels for the same grades.)
