Skills Competitor of the Year Award

This award recognises SQA candidates who have developed their vocational qualifications to competitive levels, locally or nationally.

At 27, John decided to follow his lifelong ambition to become a hairdresser, enrolling on the NQ Introduction to Hairdressing course before achieving his HNC.

John is dyslexic, and has shown real determination to excel in his studies — the number of awards he has achieved proves that. They include Gold at Scottish and National Worldskills competitions, two Silver medals at the AHT (Association of Hairdressers and Therapists) National Competitions, and a place on ‘Young Artistic Team’, a prestigious three year scholarship from L’Oreal to nurture new talent.

As well as starting his own hairdressing business and delivering masterclasses to other potential Skills Competition participants on behalf of a number of colleges, John is now studying for an HND in Make Up Artistry.
