Appointee of the Year Award

Every year SQA relies on the professional service provided by around 15,000 appointees, undertaking a wide range of tasks. This award acknowledges appointees who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to SQA over time.

Tom has held a number of roles in SQA since 1993 including Principal Assessor, Senior External Verifier and Examiner for Physical Education.

In 2010 Tom participated in an event that showed how Physical Education can be accessible to everyone, regardless of their disabilities. For the 2011 Exam Diet he was involved in ensuring SQA provided robust Marker training, resulting in a high number of ‘A’ Markers. Also in 2010 and 2011, Tom led a major project producing DVDs for Exemplification of Physical Education Performance, which was designed to help teachers with internal assessments.

Tom retired from Beeslack Community High School this year but is continuing his role as an SQA appointee, working with the Curriculum for Excellence team on the development of the new National Qualifications. When Edinburgh University heard of Tom’s retirement they persuaded him to help in the mentoring of trainee teachers as well as visiting and assessing trainees in their school placements.
