This award acknowledges school candidates who have achieved SQA qualifications and have demonstrated outstanding commitment or achievement in a number of ways, including to fellow candidates or communities. This award is sponsored by Hodder Gibson.

Carla faced the challenge of her Advanced Highers head on, while her father and two brothers were deployed to Afghanistan as part of the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. As the oldest ‘army child’ in the school, she made it her duty to act as a role model and mentor to the younger pupils.

As they waited for the safe return of their loved ones, many pupils found it difficult to focus on school life. Carla showed great patience and care as a mentor, and as Learning Support helper with S2 ICT pupils.

Studying for her Advanced Higher Product Design, Carla identified a weak spot in standardissue armed forces body armour, and diligently devised an innovative retro-fit solution.

Carla’s ambition is matched by her compassionate nature and willingness to help others. As well as impressing the teachers and pupils at Beeslack, she received two unconditional university offers as reward for her hard work.
