College Candidate of the Year Award

This award recognises candidates in colleges who have achieved SQA qualifications and can show how these qualifications have broadened their knowledge and contributed to their own personal development.

Leon is an inspirational student who has overcome severe dyslexia to make huge achievements in his personal and vocational development.

After gaining his NC in ‘The Office Experience’, he went on to work with Best Western Edinburgh Capital Hotel. Recognising his need to continue with his studies, Leon progressed to an SVQ then, with the support of his employer, embarked on Stevenson’s Highers Programme and on to an HNC in Events. He has now been accepted to join the HND in Events Management course — a significant achievement — and he is a great ambassador for progression and development through qualifications.

Leon has shown great enthusiasm and professionalism in his employment, in working with charity groups to raise money for good causes while at college, and in his commitment to learning and development. His aspirations are to pursue a relevant course at university and ultimately, a career in the events field.
