Our qualifications have been developed to meet industry standards, to ensure we equip people with the skills needed for the workplace.

SQA offers a range of qualifications at QCF levels 1, 2 and 3 levels within the Logistics sector including Warehousing & Storage and Logistics Operations.

Purpose and Recognition

Who does this qualification suit

All the qualifications are suitable for learners aged 16 years and over who are in relevant roles to generate the required evidence. Achievement of these qualifications demonstrate to an employer that the learner is capable and competent to do their own job and confirms to the learner that they have a range of flexible skills backed up by a nationally recognised vocational qualification.

These qualifications cover how to contribute to effective working relationships whilst maintaining health, safety and security within the workplace. They also have options which include picking and packing of goods; maintenance of stock levels in the warehouse; customer service; operation of equipment (eg for level 2 learners forklift trucks and hoists); cleanliness and hygiene. The Warehousing and Storage certificate at level 2 includes the award in Food Safety for Logistics at level 2.

Warehousing and Storage Level 1

The Level 1 Award and Certificate in Warehousing and Storage are for people working or wishing to work in a warehousing storage facility within the logistics sector.  They will provide a pre-employment route as well as a progression route to SQA’s qualifications in Warehousing and Storage at levels 2 and 3.

Level 1 Award in Warehousing and Storage – this qualification may be of interest to candidates looking to gain a basic understanding of the warehousing and storage industry.

Level 1 Certificate in Warehousing and Storage – this qualification allows candidates to gain more role-specific knowledge from a wider range of units than the Award.

Warehousing and Storage Level 2

The primary purpose of the Level 2 Certificate in Warehousing and Storage is to confirm occupational competence of working within a warehousing and storage environment.

This qualification covers how to contribute to effective working relationships whilst maintaining health, safety and security within the workplace.  Candidates will also develop transferable skills that are valued by employers across a range of industries such as customer service.

This qualification is included within the Intermediate Warehousing and Storage Apprenticeship framework.  You may wish to do this qualification as part of the Apprenticeship, or on its own.   If candidates complete this qualification as part of the Apprenticeship they will be required to undergo additional training, over and above the core qualification, in areas including employment rights and responsibility and/or English and maths.

They may wish to consider taking this qualification outside of the Apprenticeship framework:

  • to maximise their employment opportunities within this sector, as not all employers offer Apprenticeship places for this particular job role
  • the full Apprenticeship may not be relevant to those who are already in employment but wish to gain recognition and/or certification of their skills
  • if they meet the entry requirements to take the qualification but not those required for the apprenticeship route

Warehousing and Storage Level 3

This qualification covers the combined competence and knowledge elements needed to work in the warehousing sector.

This qualification is aimed at candidates who would like to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to operate within a supervisory role in the warehousing environment with responsibility for supervising the work of others, leading teams and responsibility for other operations e.g. as a Warehouse Supervisor.

The Diploma at level 3 covers customer care in logistics operations; leadership for your team; supervision of receipt; storage and dispatch of goods; and health, safety and security for the team. Options include transportation, recycling of goods; maintaining stock records; scheduling logistics operations; transportation documentation; improving performance; optimising use of resources; and a range of management skills eg manage the traffic office, recruitment and induction of new colleagues; team building and managing own resources. This Diploma in Warehousing and Storage includes the award in Food Safety Supervision for Logistics at level 3.

 A range of optional units are required and can be selected at the candidates’ preference.

The candidate will work with an assessor to complete a portfolio of evidence to confirm they have met the requirements of the qualification.

This qualification is included within the Advanced Warehousing and Storage Apprenticeship framework.  Candidates may wish to do this qualification as part of the Apprenticeship, or on its own.   If candidates complete this qualification as part of the Apprenticeship they will be required to undergo additional training, over and above the core qualification, in areas including employment rights and responsibility and/or English and maths.

Logistics Operations (Level 2)

The Certificate at level 2 covers health, safety and security at work; customer service; effective working relationships; and contributing to logistics sector business, preparing and protecting the vehicle; picking, placing, wrapping and packing goods; releasing vehicles for daily tasks; collection and delivery points and monitoring of vehicle movements

Learners may wish to do this qualification as part of the Intermediate Apprenticeship in Logistics Operations, or on its own.   If learners complete this qualification as part of the Apprenticeship they will be required to undergo additional training, over and above the core qualification, in areas including employment rights and responsibility and/or English and maths.

They may wish to consider taking this qualification outside of the Apprenticeship framework:

  • to maximise their employment opportunities within this sector, as not all employers offer Apprenticeship places for this particular job role
  • the full Apprenticeship may not be relevant to those who are already in employment but wish to gain recognition and/or certification of their skills

Logistics Operations (Level 3)

This qualification may be of interest to learners working in, or wishing to work in a supervisory or team leader role within a supply chain operation.

The Certificate at level 3 covers health safety and security at work, optimising the use of logistics resources and effectively contributing to a logistics business. It also has options which include customer service; leadership and improving performance; minimising environmental impact; international road transport operations; and application of technology.

Learners may wish to do this qualification as part of the Advanced Apprenticeship in Logistics Operations, or on its own.   If learners complete this qualification as part of the Apprenticeship they will be required to undergo additional training, over and above the core qualification, in areas including employment rights and responsibility and/or English and maths.

They may wish to consider taking this qualification outside of the Apprenticeship framework:

Progression

Learners can progress and gain wider experience within the logistics sector through promotion from basic warehousing and storage roles to warehousing supervisor/traffic office manager; logistics management (eg team leading, management, moving into traffic operations).

Level 1 Warehousing and Storage qualifications can provide progression into jobs working within a warehousing and storage facility e.g. as Warehouse Operatives.  These qualifications also provide a progression route to SQA’s Level 2 Certificate in Warehousing and Storage.

Level 2 Certificate in Warehousing and Storage can lead to a wide range of warehousing jobs, including:

  • Warehouse operative
  • Fork lift truck operative
  • Stock control assistant
  • Removals operative
  • Management roles

This qualification also provides a progression route to SQA’s Level 3 in Warehousing and Storage.

Level 3 Diploma in Warehousing and Storage can lead to jobs including:

  • Warehouse Operations Team Leader or Supervisor
  • Warehouse Manager
  • Transport Manager

This qualification can also provide progression into Advanced Apprenticeships, such as:

  • Logistics Operations Advanced Apprenticeship
  • Driving Goods Vehicles Advanced Apprenticeship

Level 2 Certificate in Logistics Operations can lead to jobs including:

  • Logistics Support Operative – this will involve working as part of a team with responsibility for the safe delivery of goods to customers.  This may include loading and unloading of large and heavy items and unpacking goods from packaging and recycling packaging materials.

This qualification also provides a progression route to SQA’s Level 3 Certificate in Logistics Operations.

Level 3 Certificate in Logistics Operations can lead to jobs including:

  • Logistics Operations Team Leader
  • Section Supervisor

These job roles are typically responsible for improving team performance, health and safety, customer service and scheduling the movement of goods by road, rail, sea or air.

This qualification can also provide progression to a Higher Apprenticeship in Purchasing and Supply Management.

Approval

Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.

Centres without devolved authority will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval.

How to assess

Evidence of occupational competence should be generated and collected through performance under work place conditions, using portfolios etc.

QCF Level 1

Level 1 Award in Warehousing and Storage
consists of 1 mandatory Unit (2 QCF credit points) and 10 QCF credit points to be selected from the optional Units, with a minimum of 5 QCF credit points from Optional Group 1.

Level 3 Diploma in Warehousing and Storage
consists of 4 mandatory Units (16 QCF credit points) and 24 QCF credit points to be selected from the optional Units, with a minimum of 3 units from Group 1, minimum of 2 Units from Group 2, minimum of 2 Units from Group 3, 1 Unit from Group 4 and 1 Unit from Group 5.

Access

Entry is at the discretion of the centre. Learners should be 16 years of age or over and in a job role which enable them to meet the standards.
