Purpose and Recognition
Why deliver this qualification
These qualifications provide flexibility for both learners and employers as there is flexibility in the optional units selected. As learners may be involved in shift work they may not be able to commit to regular learning times so flexibility of delivery and assessment is essential. Learners can gain qualifications at their own pace along a pathway that is relevant for their particular vehicle.
Who does this qualification suit
These qualifications are aimed at goods drivers looking to work in, or already working within the logistics sector. Goods drivers may need to work unsocial hours, and to travel extensively. A high standard of customer service is consistently required. Punctuality, attention to detail, and reliability are essential.
The Level 2 qualification is approved for 16-18 year olds, and 19+ learners.
The Level 3 qualification is approved for learners aged 18 and 19+ learners.
In order to complete either qualification learners should hold the appropriate licence (full or provisional) for the vehicle in which they are being assessed. Learners can check driving licence/age requirements for the different categories of vehicles by clicking here.
The Level 2 qualification is included within the Intermediate Apprenticeship in Driving Goods Vehicles. The Level 3 qualification is included within the Advanced Apprenticeship in Driving Goods Vehicles. Learners may wish to consider taking these qualifications outside of the Apprenticeship framework:
- If they are currently in employment within the sector and wish to confirm their occupational competence and knowledge through gaining a nationally recognised qualification
- To maximise their employment opportunities within this sector, as not all employees currently offer Apprenticeship places for these particular job roles
- They meet the entry requirements to take the qualification but not those required for the apprenticeship route.
There are opportunities to progress and gain wider experience within the logistics sector through team leading, management, or moving in to traffic operations.
There are courses and training opportunities for heavy goods vehicle drivers transporting goods with particular characteristics that require specialist skills.
The Level 2 qualification will help a learner who is looking to enter or progress further in their career as a driver of goods vehicles. On completion they may choose to continue their learning in the workplace by taking further qualifications relevant to their role, such as the SQA Level 3 Diploma in Driving Goods Vehicles.
