The Pass-IT project (Project on Assessment in Scotland-using Information Technology) was a collaborative research initiative involving a number of key agencies - SQA, LT Scotland, BBC, SFEU and SCROLLA. The aim was to investigate how best to use ICT-based assessment in schools and colleges to enhance flexibility, improve attainment and support teaching and learning.
The project ran from August 2002 until December 2004. Different formats of online assessments were created, piloted and evaluated - across twenty-nine centres and involving over a thousand candidates - with a view to supporting teaching and learning, supporting candidates with additional needs and investigating quality assurance issues. These included online Unit assessments for HNC Computing as well as for NABs in Mathematics (Advanced Higher to Access 2); Chemistry, French and Music (Higher) and English (Intermediate 1). Software simulations were also developed to support Prescribed Practical Activities for Higher and Advanced Higher Chemistry.
Pass-IT research findings will inform the future development and implementation of online assessment for SQA qualifications. Further information on the project, including outcomes such as: a Good Practice Guide in Question and Test Design; Pass-IT Guidelines for Online Assessment; and a link to a demonstration of Pass-IT questions, is available on the project website at www.pass-it.org.uk.
