PDA Certificate in Supporting Individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorders at SCQF level 7

The PDA Certificate in Supporting Individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorders at SCQF level 7 has been developed to meet the needs of managers and senior practitioners, with responsibility for people who work with individuals with autistic spectrum disorders. It can also provide development opportunities for other professionals who manage people who work with individuals with autistic spectrum disorders.

This qualification is available through training providers and colleges.

Why deliver this qualification

The PDA Certificate in Supporting Individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) aims to improve services for individuals with ASD, by expanding the number of people who have the skills and knowledge to work effectively with such individuals.

The PDA builds on, and allows professional development opportunities for candidates who have completed the SVQ in Health and Social Care at level 3 and the HNC in Social Care.

It addresses the need to extend the number of people with the skills and knowledge required to work with individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorders to enable quality services to be delivered and expanded for individuals with ASD within:

  • specialist provision
  • generic residential provision
  • community provision, including providing support for individuals with ASD who wish to live independently

Who does this qualification suit

The PDA Certificate in Supporting Individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorders is suitable for:

  • existing employees who have already completed the SVQ level 3 and wish to specialise in working with individuals with ASD
  • employees that are already working with individuals with ASD and wish to take the PDA alongside their SVQ
  • candidates who have completed the HNC in Social Care and wish to specialise in working with individuals with ASD
  • professionals in the health sector including psychologists, health visitors, general practitioners, nurses (including particularly community nurses), audiologists, pediatricians, dieticians, primary care team support, workers involved in health promotion
  • social workers and other professionals who are required to support individuals with ASD, their families and carers
  • individuals who are interested in working with individuals with ASD and wish to work within the social care sector

Access

It is preferable, but not essential that candidates have some experience of care work, either paid or voluntary.
It will be essential that the candidate is able to work with children, young people or adults who have been diagnosed as being on the autistic spectrum. This may be either through employment in a relevant work setting or by accessing an appropriate work placement.

Progression

The PDA can also provide development opportunities for other professionals working with individuals with ASD. It may provide pathways into social care work and to higher level academic study.

Approval

Centres interested in offering this qualification should come forward for approval and contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide (510 KB). The specific delivery requirements are set out in the Group Award Specification (Arrangements Document).

How to assess

The holistic collection of evidence is always preferred, so it will be important to plan how the candidates will work through the Units, especially the evidence for the HN Unit: Supporting Individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorders and the SVQ Units.

The HN Unit Working with People with Autistic Spectrum Disorders as a practical Unit will need to be authenticated by a Workplace Assessor, however the knowledge component could be suitably delivered through Open Learning.

The SVQ Units by their nature will be authenticated by a Workplace Assessor who must assess the candidate for the Units according the SVQ Assessment Strategy.
